This is another project with a double meaning.
In this case, not only I designed the costumes based on the actual setting of Victor Hugo's novel, but my mind went wondering and wandering, through time...
A story as poignant as this one, when could have happened? when could it have a deep meaning as well? A time where fight, prejudice, love, death, menace and redemption walked hand in hand in everyday's life. Not only 1480, but more recently, these characters could have had the same story in a real setting that would make them be more real and more meaningful than they are in a 19th century novel set in the 15th century.
So for me, the choice came clear as a lightning: Nazi occupied Paris in 1942
In this project, I wanted to keep and work with mood boards and fabrics for the original time setting, again reflecting the temperaments of the main 5 characters. And then work with them to create the costumes for the 20th century setting.
Each week, I will post one character in both settings.
I hope you enjoy it.
