Being Spanish, I have a knowledge of the history of my country and as passionate of history, I have my favourites. I have read about them, investigated, and formed my own opinion about them.

Spain wasn't seen as one till these 2 first characters got married. It was not the first marriage between the kingdoms they represented, but there was something special about them: he was a descendant of the reignant family of the other kingdom and when they were little, there were talks about an eventual marriage could bring. I bet they never forgot it. And when they were older and their circumstances changed - she was suddenly heiress of the crown after the death of her brother and the birth of a dubious legitimate heiress to the regnant king - there was the momentum they needed.

We always are told of true love matches that happened in history. This was one of them, though born from calculation too. A couple who complemented each other perfectly, in politics and family life. With clashes, fights, and compromises. Some of them public, some of them private.

They achieved great highs in their public life, and suffered great blows in their private one. What started as a marriage of convenience, became an equal partnership in ambition, passion, strength, love and aim. The kernel of the future though never thought of, Spanish Empire. And that's what I tried to show in their sketches: fierceness, intelligence, presence, allure.

My favourite king and queen in Spain.

They are: the Catholic Monarchs.

  • Isabel I of Castille

  • Ferdinand II of Aragon

Isabel la Católica modern age
Royal strength

Isabel of Castille was not born to be a reignant queen. Half-sister to the monarch, elder sister to the heir when doubts about her legitimacy were cast upon the crown princess. But when the political and personal circumstances pressured her enough, she showed everyone what she was made of. Resilient, strong, passionate but controlled, straightforward in her opinions and beliefs, and putting the welfare of the kingdom before anything else. Something that made her take decisions that even now and day are quite controversial. She finished the Re-Conquest of Spain with her husband army and had the vision that lead to the discovery of a new world.

She's not all white, she's not all black. She can take a difficult time and make it better. She never forgets who she is and what is her aim. She is a mother, too. That's why I dressed her with good quality fabrics, with strong silhouette but feminine and traditional too. And able to take a country devastated for war and turn it better. That's why I placed her after Spanish Civil War.

She is not a dictator. But she is a fierce ruler.

Ferdinand of Aragon, cool intelligence
Cool Intelligence

Ferdinand of Aragon, a king like no one. Ambitious, fun, intelligent, tricky, smart. Ruthless too. He gets what he wants. He can be a charmer - and not only of ladies, he was adored by his soldiers and subjects too - but ferocious in his dealings, both in the court and in battle. Whereas his wife is really straightforward, he can be deceiving. But not less determined as her. They complemented each other perfectly. He has been judged severely after her death, but don't forget he was a king too trying to protect their work and at least, his kingdom.

So, if Isabel was imagined as what was needed after a social upheaval and a war, Ferdinand is the one ready to sell you the project of their lives.

I couldn't place him in any other place than a 50s executive of a multinational. Relaxed, calmed, cool.. as his suit palette shows. Quality fabrics too, he is someone in this world, the best. Attractive. Appealing. But his red shoes and his signet ring show his passion, both for his life and her.

Don't underestimate him.
